Oral Contraceptives and Deep Vein Thrombosis Are oral contraceptives a risk factor for progression to DVT in patients with undiagnosed May-Thurner anatomy?

چکیده
M ay-Thurner syndrome is characterized by compression of the left common iliac vein by the right iliac artery against the fifth lumbar vertebrae.1 Although the risk of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is increased in this setting, it is not absolute, with the incidence of DVT significantly less than the estimated incidence of this variant anatomy. It has been proposed that progression to thrombosis in May-Thurner anatomy is influenced by other factors negatively altering a patient’s coagulation profile.1-4 Oral contraceptive (OC) use is known to increase an individual’s risk of DVT, and additionally, a left-sided predominance of DVT in women on OCs has been noted. However, women with DVT on OCs are not typically evaluated for this anatomic variant. Herein, we present the case of a 16-year-old female with previously undiagnosed May-Thurner syndrome who developed acute left-sided DVT 1 month after the initiation of OC therapy. We suggest that MayThurner syndrome may be underdiagnosed and undertreated in young women in this setting.

Aims: Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is one of the common cardiovascular diseases caused by the formation of clots in deep veins. The aim of this study was to determine the relative frequency of the risk factors of lower limb deep vein thrombosis in patients referred to teaching hospitals in Yasuj city from 2013 to 2014. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, 277 cases of DVT patients who were hos...
متن کاملMassive Deep Vein Thrombosis Underlying Unexpected Iliac Vein Compression Syndrome (May-Thurner Syndrome) Complicated by Invasive Electrophysiologic Procedure
A 44-year-old woman, who was obese and on oral contraceptive medication, presented with recurrent palpitation to the emergency department. A 12-lead electrocardiography showed narrow QRS complex tachycardia with a short RP interval. On electrophysiology study, typical atrioventricular nodal reentrant tachycardia was confirmed by differential pacing maneuvers, and a radiofrequency slow pathway m...
متن کاملRisk Factors and Recurrence Rate of Primary Deep Vein Thrombosis of the Upper Extremities
Background—One third of cases of upper-extremity deep vein thrombosis (DVT) are primary, ie, they occur in the absence of central venous catheters or cancer. Risk factors for primary upper-extremity DVT are not well established, and the recurrence rate is unknown. Methods and Results—We studied 115 primary upper-extremity DVT patients and 797 healthy controls for the presence of thrombophilia d...

The risk of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) in women taking oral contraceptives is increased if they are also cigarette smokers.' On the other hand, cigarette smoking has been said to "protect" against the subsequent development of DVT after myocardial infarction2 3 and also after emergency surgery.4 Our own study into the relation between cigarette smoking and postoperative DVT was part of a multi-...
